Thomas Jefferson

In Thomas Jefferson's "Notes on the State of Virginia", he advises the state of Virgina to change unfair laws about religion while they still can. He predicts that our country will loose everything it has gained from becoming independent, and that it will return to the way it was under English rule. He says, "Our rulers will become corrupt, our people careless... It can never be too often repeated, that the time for fixing every essential right on a legal basis is while our rulers are honest, and ourselves united. From the conculsion of this war we shall be going downhill..." Do you think any part of what Thomas Jefferson predicted has come true? Is it possible that it could still come true?

I partially feel that Thomas Jefferson’s ideas about our American Society potentially becoming corrupt are true due to the underlying facts of our everyday life. Day in and day out, I notice that Americans abuse their rights, as Jefferson put, “our people are becoming careless”, which can become a factor of America collapsing in the future. Our rulers over our country are continuing to face problems such as War in Iraq, aiding a struggle for peace in Israel, and terrorist threats that affect our everyday lives. I agree that we should rethink about our freedoms and our laws indicted in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights to perfect our culture it’s fullest. But looking back on the other part of the question, if Britain could ever reinstate its power upon the US, I feel that this theory is a bust, for there are countries of far more power such as China, Korea, Germany, possibly even Russia due to its extent of Nuclear power,(as Wikipedia states, Russia has some 16,000 Nuclear Warheads). For these reasons, I feel that if the US should fall, it would be impossible for use to go back to our past time of British rule in the 1700’s.

I do believe that part of Thomas Jeffersons idea's have come true. Right now we are in a war that most people at this point don't care if it goes on or ends today. The President has almost all control over what goes on and the only reason why that happens is because the majority of American society believes in the same God as the president. This helps him to say that terrorist gods tell those people to do what their gods say. We see it as wrong and stay on the president's side. However this does not mean that a government without a religion is balanced and fair. The Soviet Union and other communist nations operated and still operate like that and most of them start wars and have nuclear weapons. So yes this has happened and it will happen once again.

I feel that Thomas Jefferson's pridictions have partially come true. He sayes "the time for fixing every essential right on a legal basis is while our rulers are honest, and ouselves united." In modern times I think that our rulers aren't very honest because they only tell us what we want to hear because we'll only get upset and blame it on them if they tell us something bad.

"From the conclusion of this war we shall be going downhill..." I think that it is possible that what Jefferson pridicted could come true. He sayes that after the war we will be going downhill. Can you connect this in anyway to the war in Iraq?
