Thomas Paine interpretation
"In the early ages of the world, according to the scripture chronology, there were no kings; the consequence of which was there were no wars; it is the pride of kings which throw mankind into confusion." Why do you think kings caused so much confusion and so many problems? Why do you think kings were so pride-full? How does peace seem not to exist when a king is in controll?

Kings usually become king by hereditary right, unlike presidents and other government officals in a democracy. Kings are not choosen by their people, so they don't represent what their people want and believe. This is why it is hard for peace to exist in a country that has a king. There will always be a group of people who disagree with their king and stand up against him. In a democracy, the president is choosen by the people. This dosen't mean everyone will agree with what the president does, but they have the right to try to change laws and stand up for what they think is right. When people in America started standing up to the king in England, he began making and enforcing harsher laws.
Also, it is important to realize that Paine is portraying a biased view of kings in order to be more persuasive. There have been good kings and queens in world history, but acknowledging this doesn't help Henry further his cause.
